Why this looks smoother than NOAA’s national map: NOAA colors every individual 4km pixel, while each county here is one number — the average of the 100+ pixels inside it. Averaging softens the extremes, so a county with pockets of deep-blue lushness or a small stressed area will paint closer to the middle of the scale (this is most visible in lake-and-forest country like northern Minnesota). Use this map to compare counties at a glance; use NOAA’s maps below to spot hotspots inside a county.
